Where to Place a Portable Cabin: 7 Site Selection Tips

Choosing the right spot for a portable cabin decides how stable, dry and usable it will be. Get the ground, access and drainage right and the cabin lasts for years; get them wrong and you face settling, water ingress and delivery problems. Here are seven practical tips for placing a portable cabin on your site.

SAMAN POS India Private Limited manufactures steel portable cabins (since 2009; incorporated 2019) to IS 2062 standards and delivers across India, so these tips reflect real installation experience.

1. Pick Firm, Level Ground

A portable cabin needs a firm, reasonably level base. Soft or uneven ground causes settling and door/window misalignment. A compacted base, concrete plinth or pre-cast footings spread the load evenly.

2. Plan Delivery Access & Craneage

The unit arrives by truck and is usually offloaded by crane or hydraulic system. Check approach width, overhead clearance (cables, branches) and a firm path for the vehicle before delivery day.

3. Manage Drainage & Water Flow

Place the cabin so rainwater drains away, not under it. Avoid low spots that pool water. A slightly raised base keeps the floor dry and protects the steel frame.

4. Position for Utilities

Locate near practical points for power, water and drainage connections. Shorter runs are cheaper and safer than long temporary cabling across a busy site.

5. Respect Setbacks & Permissions

Keep clear of boundaries, other structures and any local setback rules. For longer-term placement, check whether site or municipal permissions apply.

6. Think About Orientation & Comfort

Orientation affects heat and light. Insulated panels help, but avoiding the harshest afternoon sun on the largest wall keeps interiors cooler.

7. Choose the Right Foundation Option

For short-term use, a compacted/levelled base may suffice. For longer placement, a concrete plinth or footings give the most stable, durable result. We can advise the right base for your cabin and site.

Cover: 5 years on the structural frame and base, 1–2 years on finishing, and a 20–25 year engineered service life. Standard delivery ₹3,000; transit 3–5 days.

FAQs: Placing a Portable Cabin

Does a portable cabin need a foundation?

Short-term use can sit on a compacted, level base; longer placement is best on a concrete plinth or footings for stability.

How much access space is needed for delivery?

Enough width and overhead clearance for a truck and crane/offload. Confirm the approach path before delivery.

Can a portable cabin sit on uneven ground?

It should be levelled first; uneven ground causes settling and door/window issues.

Are permissions needed to place a portable cabin?

For short-term site use usually not, but longer-term or municipal land may require permission — check locally.
